In my last article, I wrote about why so many neurodivergent women feel alone, even:
- in a room full of people,
- in long-term relationships,
- when they’re “doing all the right things”
And I’ve been sitting with something that keeps coming up in conversations, therapy rooms, and late-night voice notes with other AuDHD women:
How do we stay connected to our truth… …without losing our relationships?
How do we stay free and feel deeply connected? How do we trust someone without abandoning ourselves?
These aren’t just wishful ideas, they are the daily negotiations happening inside the AuDHD nervous system.
The Push-Pull of Being Too Much and Not Enough
For so many AuDHD women, our inner world feels like a constellation of contradictions:
- A part of us craves deep intimacy, but another flinches at too much closeness.
- We long for authentic expression, but we’ve spent decades learning to suppress our needs to preserve harmony.
- We want to feel safe and secure, but also resist anything that feels too rigid or confining.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not broken. You’re made of different parts that likely have opposing needs and wants.
The Self: When Your Parts Want Different Things
Let me offer an image that’s helped me make sense of this:
Imagine your inner world as a solar system.
One planet is your inner child, craving soothing, closeness, reassurance. Another is your freedom-seeker, the one who needs movement, space, and autonomy. There’s the caretaker, who manages, smooths over, and masks for peace. And the truth-teller, who can’t bear to pretend anymore.
All of these parts are orbiting around the same sun: 🌞 Your truest essence.
But most of us were never taught how to listen to these parts, let alone integrate them.
What Happens When We Don’t Reconcile the Parts?
With a nervous system that is prone to dysregulation, AuDHDers can live in emotional extremes:
- Over-functioning, then withdrawing.
- Idealising a new connection, then fearing we’ll disappear inside it.
- Saying yes when we mean no, just to avoid rupture.
- Staying silent because we’ve learned that truth can cost us love.
When these survival strategies carry on for decades, Many AuDHD women carry a false self into relationships. Not out of deception, but out of survival.
What Does Integration Actually Look Like?
It’s not about being “perfectly balanced.” It’s about developing internal trust, so we can choose connection without sacrificing authenticity.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Notice the parts: “There’s a part of me that wants closeness… and another that feels smothered.”
- Give each part a voice: without shaming or rushing it away.
- Create safety within: so external validation becomes a bonus, not a lifeline.
- Name your needs: not all at once, but gently, over time, like revealing a treasure map.
- Choose people who honour all of you: not just the convenient or palatable versions.
Modern Relationships Need New Tools
Especially for AuDHD women.
We don’t fit inside outdated gender roles, attachment theories, or linear timelines. Our nervous systems are nuanced. Our love is layered. And we need relationships that reflect that.
We need partners who meet us in the middle, not with perfection, but with curiosity.
And we need professionals and peers who understand that neurodivergent connection is complex… but also deeply, deeply meaningful.
To All the NDs Who Have Loved, I’d Love to Hear From You:
- Which part of you gets activated most in relationships?
- What does freedom & connection look like for you?
- What tools have helped you come home to your authentic self while staying open to love?
If you’re supporting neurodivergent women through these tender intersections, or if you are that woman, I hope you’ll join me in this ongoing conversation. We all deserve relationships that honour our full humanity, not just our functionality.
Relationship is a crucial layer to understand and support AuDHD women within our AuDHD Intersectional Scientific Framework.
